The world’s best hotel villas

FRANSCHHOEK

VILLAS IN THE VINEYARDS

at La Residence Franschhoek, South Africa

Sleeps 2-6

The five villas at La Residence, deep in the dreamy winelands of Franschhoek Valley, were once workers’ cottages, but any hint of their humble beginnings has long been jettisoned. Owner Liz Biden has a famous affinity with rich fabrics – in fiery red, ginger, lime, purple and pink – gilt-framed mirrors and Oriental rugs. The effect is as flamboyant as Liberace and as operatic as a joyful aria; these are palaces-in-miniature and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

Although described as family villas (the hotel itself does not take guests under 12), these are very adult spaces (as the full-size bottles of booze in the mirrored minibars attest) with nary a wipe-down surface or ironing board in sight. Two of the villas have private pools, and there’s another at The Terrace Room, the villas’ rustic-elegant restaurant and sitting room.

Key note The villas are run as a separate entity (although you are free to join in at the main hotel) so the service is fantastically personal; chat with the chef about lunch or dinner, and join him in the kitchen if you like. Nothing is impossible: just ask.

Costs From £2,185 per person for four nights, including British Airways flights, car hire, breakfast, snacks, full minibar and laundry
