From his Notting Hill home, Mr Simon Moyes has been known to cycle into work at his clinic at The Wellington Hospital or his city clinics in The Shard and Old Broad Street. Taking a leaf from his own medical advice he maintains a variety of exercise routines: he is an avid skier and a keen cyclist, but he also dabbles in tennis or a spot of Meditterrean yoga. Keeping fit and keeping up with some of his patients is key to running a practise where some of his patients are internationally renowned athletes or fast-living City workers that regularly fly across the glove to be treated by him.

Mr Simon Moyes is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in arthroscopic surgery, with a focus on sports medicine. Simon’s main research interests concerns the development of minimally invasive and Arthroscopic techniques for the knee, shoulder, foot and ankle, and he always practises the latest advances in orthopaedic medicine and surgery.

Patients from across the globe, including countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Russia and even as far as Japan, have flown into the UK just to visit Mr Moyes’ practices over the years, but it is his patients from the Middle East that make up the main bulk of his international base. 20% of his patients come fromoutside the UK and much of his work is shoulder surgery carried out on patients from the UAE, including Oman, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. From this market alone, Mr Moyes’ has seen an increase in over 90% in the last few years.

According to insight by healthcare researchers Laing Buisson, London is the capital of the world when it comes to seeking medical advice and treatment. The research suggests that international patients prefer to visit London-based consultants for complex treatments, and this is represented in the international work, Simon regularly performs at his clinic.

Mr Moyes’ was at the forefront of introducing Arthroscopic techniques, which is highly sophisticated, minimally invasive technique where patients spend less time in hospital and are more likely to have a quick recovery. It is ideal for many orthopaedic procedures in joints, such as removing or repairing torn cartilage, ligament and tendon reconstruction and smoothing out bone defects. Due to the nature of the surgery – since the joint does not have to be opened fully – there is less risk of infection, healing can be quicker, scarring is minimal and there is less trauma to the connective tissue in the joint. This is especially useful for those who want to make a quick visit to London to tend to other business or pleasure while undertaking treatment.

Simon says; “Most international patients find me through word of mouth after I have treated friends, colleagues or relatives abroad. Looking at our internal patient satisfaction score where we received the highest scores, patients commented on how they felt confident or reassured by the medical advice and information provided and the prompt responses and follow up appointments. For patients requiring an overnight stay, we have an International Relations service to make the whole journey as smooth as possible. There are interpreters available, our luxury hotel service in the hospital also offers Halal or kosher meals – any special dietary requirement can be catered for. The hospital also has a multi faith worship room available for use. All of our facilities and options ensure the patient experience is as comfortable and efficient as possible.

Simon’s previous work includes being a former lecturer in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and also working at University College Hospital. He is an International member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and it is his breath of experience that has inspired Simon’s contribution towards transforming Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery over the last decade. Simon is now taking bone and joint healthcare to a whole new level using stem cell techniques, Simon comments, “I am particularly interested in stem cell treatments for cartilage repair and regeneration. It is being hailed as a revolutionary technique for medicine and is moving at a fast pace. Having seen the dramatic results stem cell treatments can deliver I am keen to ensure that we can deliver it here.”

Simon has undertaken his own research into current developments in stem cell technology for cartilage regeneration over the last two years. In the past 12 months, Simon has specifically looked at a number of manufacturing companies specialising in orthopaedic products that have developed systems to utilise stem cells taken from bone marrow. He is currently working with these companies to assess the efficacy of new regenerative orthopaedic treatments. His international following is still increasing but for the meantime, Simon Moyes will ensure that all patients receive the very best bone and joint health for the foreseeable future.
